| Homework and Test Study Strategies (Checkout our WEBSITE: http://cghs.cguhsd.org and then DEPARTMENTS) | | Mathematics | | HOMEWORK: A good math textbook can be your own private tutor at home or in school. You can do a lot of homework on your own if you know how to use the example problems. Mathematics is NOT just completing problems. It also includes vocabulary with concepts! Analogy: It is hard to understand a football game if you do not understand terms used in the game. | Find an example problem that is similar to your homework problem. Look at EACH line of the example problem. How did the textbook authors complete that first step? Second step? Third step? Etc.? It may help to write down the example problem and work it out following the steps in the textbook. Don’t become frustrated if you have to reexamine each step a few times! YOU WILL GET IT!
Still having problems? | Review the vocabulary terms in bold or italics. Mathematics is like a language all of its own. Understanding vocabulary is essential when completing math problems! It is difficult to understand the example problems if you do not know the vocabulary terms. | | Finally, read the introductory paragraphs. (You know, the ones right under the title of the section!) The intro gives you an example of how this lesson inside the classroom CAN BE used outside of the classroom in the REAL WORLD. This makes mathematics more valuable to you! |
| | TEST PREPARATION: As soon as you find out the test date, review one or two chapter sections each evening! | KNOW the definitions of the words in bold or italics. Work some sample problems. If you have trouble doing the sample problems, go to MATHEMATICS HOMEWORK above. Review each night BEFORE the test for 15 to 30 minutes. You will know the material and your test should be a breeze.
